SOUTHEAST SCHOOL COMMUNITY COUNCIL
In 1991 Southeast School joined the Alliance for
Achievement program, now known as the Southeast School Community Council.
The goal of the program is to form a close school community partnership
with open, two-way communication among parents, teachers, students and
community members. In an effort to achieve this goal, we have identified
four main objectives upon which we can all focus.
1. Reading
Southeast
students will read well, read often and enjoy reading.
2. Communication
Southeast
students will learn to communicate effectively through development of
listening,
speaking and writing skills.
3. Healthy Mind
& Body
Southeast
students will feel good about themselves and make healthy choices.
4. Respect for
Self & Others
Southeast
students will treat other people fairly, tolerantly and respectfully, use
good
manners;
and display common courtesies.
5. Math
Southeast
students will master basic math concepts and problem-solving skills
and apply
them using a variety of techniques.
READING: SOUTHEAST STUDENTS WILL READ
WELL AND READ OFTEN
The School Community expects students to
1. read to a family member or listen
to a family member read at least once a week;
2. talk about reading with family members, friends
and/or teachers once a week;
3. write about their reading experiences at least
once a week in school;
4. use the SQ3R method in grades 3-5 when reading
material.
The School Community expects parents to
1. read to or listen to each child at
least once a week;
2. encourage their children to read to each other;
3. talk about reading with their children;
4. set a family reading time as a family activity.
The School Community expects teachers to
1. read to students daily;
2. require students to read each day during the
Silent Sustained Reading period;
3. make "Writing About Reading" assignments each
grading period;
4. conduct class discussions about reading;
5. teach students in grades 3-5 to use and practice
applying the SQ3R method of reading. (SQ3R = Scan the material to be read,
ask some Questions you would like answered, Read the material, Review the
material and Re-read the material as necessary to answer questions and/or
master the material).
COMMUNICATION: SOUTHEAST STUDENTS WILL
COMMUNICATE WELL BOTH ORALY AND IN WRITING
The School Community expects students to
1. practice active listening skills;
2. speak clearly and appropriately;
3. practice writing on a daily basis;
4. identify and express feelings appropriately;
5. "think before they speak".
The School Community expects parents to
1. listen attentively to their children
(eye contact, positive acknowledgements);
2. praise children for using a polite tone of
voice;
3. encourage their children to write letters
or make telephone calls to relatives/friends at least once a month;
4. reinforce the appropriate way to enter and
exit a conversation;
5. acknowledge their child’s feelings and help
them express their feelings in an appropriate manner.
The School Community expects teachers to
1. teach active listening skills daily;
2. require students to write for a designated
purpose each day;
3. require students to speak clearly and appropriately
when asking or responding to questions;
4. insure each child has the opportunity to express
himself/herself daily;
5. teach and reinforce public speaking skill
through oral reports, introductions, etc.
HEALTHY MIND & BODY: SOUTHEAST STUDENTS
WILL FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES AND MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES
The School Community expects students to
1. get adequate rest and exercise;
2. eat a balanced diet;
3. dress appropriately for the weather conditions
and school activities;
4. start each day with a positive attitude;
5. avoid using substances harmful to the body
(tobacco, inhalants, etc.).
The School Community expects parents to
1. set and enforce a bed time to insure
adequate rest;
2. provide nutritious meals and snacks for their
children;
3. provide opportunities for their children to
participate in physical activities each day;
4. set a positive role model for their children
and not misuse drugs or alcohol;
5. start each day with a positive attitude and
encourage their children to do the same.
The School Community expects teachers to
1. teach appropriate nutritional habits;
2. include physical activity in each school day;
3. educate students about the dangers/harmful
effects of drugs and alcohol on the body;
4. be a positive role model for students and
not misuse drugs or alcohol;
5. start each day with a positive attitude and
encourage their students to do the same.
RESPECT FOR SELF AND OTHERS: SOUTHEAST
STUDENTS WILL TREAT OTHERS FAIRLY AND RESPECTFULLY AND USE GOOD MANNERS
The School Community expects students to
1. take pride in themselves and their
school work;
2. respect and follow community rules and laws;
3. to be honest;
4. respect other people’s property;
5. exhibit good table and telephone manners;
6. make proper introductions, greet and respond
to people warmly and respectfully;
7. pay a sincere compliment to someone each day
and accept compliments sincerely.
The School Community expects parents to
1. teach their children self-respect
and to take pride in their work;
2. teach children to respect their own and other
people’s property;
3. teach and reinforce school and community rules
and laws;
4. teach their children to value honesty;
5. encourage their children to help others;
6. teach and reinforce table and telephone manners;
7. teach their children to give and receive sincere
compliments;
8. discipline their children in an appropriate
and consistent manner.
The School Community expects teachers to
1. encourage and reinforce students for
being polite and helpful to others;
2. teach and reinforce table and telephone manners;
3. teach students to make proper introductions;
4. teach and encourage students to give and receive
sincere compliments;
5. teach and reinforce school and community rules
and laws;
6. teach students to respect their own and other
