Sycamore Community School District
Gifted and Talented Education Services (GaTES)

Components of the GaTES Program

It is the policy of the Sycamore Community School District to provide accelerated opportunities through the GaTES program for those students who meet set criteria for both Mathematics and Literature in order to meet the needs of students with advanced abilities.

State guidelines allow each district to develop a program in areas of giftedness. The guidelines require at least three means of identification be used in the process of selecting students. Identification in Sycamore considers achievement tests, school ability tests, teacher observations that may include creativity measures and samples of student work.

Sycamore School District 427 has elected to participate in gifted education by offering a mathematics program for grades 6–12 and a literature program for students in 6 – 8. Students in grades 9-12 have the opportunity to be challenged by advanced placement courses offered at the high school. Each program is different in scope, its identification criteria, and its method of implementation.
