Recorder |
![]() |
| Recorder is a part of the fourth and fifth grade music curriculum. This is a part of
our program that we really feel will enhance your child's musical experience as well as prepare students who would
like to consider joining one of our instrumental groups. We will be using a reward system called recorder karate.
For each new concept, song, or sight-reading mastered, students will earn a belt for their recorder. There are
a total of 20 belts that your child can earn throughout the fourth and fifth grade. When a child learns to play an instrument they apply all of the music skills such as reading pitch and rhythm, keeping a steady tempo, improvising, ear training, and learning musical terms as well as being able to be an active participant in the music of a variety of cultures, different eras of history, and many different composers. Your child's success on recorder will be a part of your child's music skill grade at the end of each semester. As with any academic area in school, your child will need to practice regularly at home to practice the new notes and songs that they learn as a part of music class. Please encourage your child to complete their 3-5 minutes of music "homework". You may have already seen recorder sheets going home and being practiced so they can earn their belts. If you haven't, encourage your child to bring the sheets home and practice and earn their belts as it is a large part of their skill grade. At school, each child is provided with a recorder to use. However, these recorders must remain at school as they are sanitized and run through an electric dishwasher at the end of each school year for use the next year. If you do not have a recorder at home for your child to use, they may purchase one through the school district. If you need to purchase one, please send $5.00 to school with your child and I will send a recorder home with them. Fifth grade students also have the option opportunity to use an alto recorder that is used for some of the higher belts. The alto recorder is a size larger than the soprano recorder which students have used in the past. Each school only has a limited number of alto recorders that students may check out to practice at home with. Therefore, alto recorders are also available for purchase if students would like one of their own to play. If your child would like to purchase an alto recorder, please send $18.00 to school with your child and I will send an alto recorder home with them. Thank you for all of your support.
