5th Grade Band Registration

Dear Parents of Fifth Grade Students:

We are excited that our 5th Grade Band registration is rapidly approaching.  We would like to encourage interested 5th grade students to experience the joys of playing an instrument.  In addition to being fun, band membership allows students to build both self-discipline and self-esteem.  The skills that band nurtures are those that will point students toward success in life.  Finally, students who participate in musical ensembles traditionally score higher on standardized tests than students who do not participate.  We hope that every parent whose child indicates an interest in playing an instrument will support and encourage this interest.

The Sycamore School District band program has two primary means of instruction.  Students will have a weekly small group lesson during school, and after their first few weeks of small group instruction, they will also rehearse once a week after school as a full band.  The band instruments they may choose from include: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Baritone, and Percussion (drums and bells).

5th Grade Band Registration Schedule

Wednesday, August 28   
Instrument Demonstrations: These will take place at each elementary school, introducing students to each instrument so they can begin thinking about what they might like to play.

Thursday, August 29 - Tuesday, September 10
Band teachers will be checking in with students in classes to try them out on instrument mouthpieces and answer questions about band and instruments.  

Wednesday, September 11 and Thursday, September 12
Band Registration Evenings:  Registration will take place at North Grove Elementary School from 6:30 – 8:30 PM on Wednesday, September 11, and from 6:30 – 7:30 PM on Thursday, September 12.   Ellman’s Music (www.ellmansmusic.com) will be present to explain their rental program, and you will have the opportunity to either rent or purchase an instrument at this time.  You only have to attend one of these sessions, and you may show up at any point during the times listed above.
