Dear Sycamore Community School District 427 community,
We would like to inform you about an important decision that will appear on the ballot during the upcoming election on November 5, 2024. The Board of Education has voted to place the following proposition on the ballot:
"Shall the members of the Board of Education of Sycamore Community Unit School District No. 427, DeKalb and Kane Counties, Illinois, be elected at large and without restriction by area of residence within the school district?"
This proposition was approved for placement on the ballot during the Board of Education meeting held on June 25, 2024. Currently, no more than three members of our Board of Education can be elected from any one congressional township within the district, as mandated by Section 5/10-10.5 of the School Code. The proposed change would allow for the election of board members at large, without restriction by area of residence within the district.
For this referendum to pass, one of the following two outcomes must occur:
1. All of the townships in the district must pass the proposition by a simple majority, or
2. A super majority (two-thirds) of all voters in the district must approve it.
It’s important to note that a simple majority of all voters is not sufficient to pass the referendum. Your vote will play a crucial role in determining how future members of our Board of Education are elected. We encourage you to participate in this important decision during the November election.
