New Teacher Features: Sycamore High School

Meet the new teachers who will be working at Sycamore High School!

Mrs. Clark, Counselor

What do you like to do in your free time?
Road Trips (our kids have been to 47 states and Canada), reading, and researching.

What school memory from when you were a student still impacts you today?
I transferred to a new school my Junior year. My high school counselor put me in classes I had already been in due to limited class options in a small school. I resented it, but persevered. People just thought I was really smart since I had the highest grades in most classes, and voted me most likely to succeed by my Senior year.

Why did you choose to become a teacher?
Serving others is my purpose. Children and teens have so much to learn, and some have learned far too much prematurely. I became a teacher to help students learn and grow. I became a counselor to listen and help others succeed.

Ms. Konie, Special Education

What do you like to do in your free time?
Golf, exercise, hang with my kids and friends, travel.

What's the most interesting job that you have ever had?
While in college I had a summer job working Bike Patrol with a police department.

Why did you choose to become a teacher?
My dad was in education and worked as the guidance counselor for students with IEPs and many who had behavior problems. He was a big influence in why I went into education. I saw how he wanted to really help those kids and he cared about them.

Mrs. Davies, English

What do you like to do in your free time?
Camping, kayaking, hiking, mixed media art, painting, gardening, and reading.

What school memory from when you were a student still impacts you today?
An English teacher waved a prerequisite for me so that I could take Creative Writing as a sophomore. She really challenged me to nurture my writing even though I wasn't the most stellar student grade-wise.

Why did you choose to become a teacher?
I remember high school being a tough time for me and I really wanted to help inspire students to explore the very big world with very big opportunities waiting for them. Sometimes I think students can't see beyond their small bubbles and I love teaching them about the world through literature and showing them their true potentials/voices in writing.

Ms. Butkus, Art

What do you like to do in your free time?
Work on my personal art or commission work, tend to my garden, and spend quality time with my friends and family.

What's the most interesting job that you have ever had?
I was commissioned to recreate a stolen husky statue 15 years after its creation because it was stolen!

Why did you choose to become a teacher?
I first knew when I was in kindergarten and walked into my first art class, which felt like magic overlooking the Rocky Mountains. Even when I moved at a young age, all of my art teachers throughout my schooling impacted me so much, that I wanted to follow in their footsteps and create a similar environment for inspiration.

Ms. Castro, Spanish

What do you like to do in your free time?
Spend time with my loved ones, bike ride, read, and watch Netflix/Hulu.

What school memory from when you were a student still impacts you today?
Senior Awards Night - I was very lucky to have the support of my teachers and community to be able to be awarded scholarships to continue my education as a first-generation Latinx.

Why did you choose to become a teacher?
I always said that if going to school and learning was a career, I'd be in school forever. My love for continual learning makes me passionate about teaching which can then be passed down to my students and so on.

Miss Hoiness, Special Education

What do you like to do in your free time?

What school memory from when you were a student still impacts you today?
A school memory that still impacts me today would be the Rachel's Challenge assembly my Junior year of high school!

Why did you choose to become a teacher?
I chose to become a teacher because I have always had a passion for working with children and making a positive impact on their lives.
