Sycamore Community School District 427 Expands Access to Athletics and Extracurricular Activities for Homeschool and Private School Students

Sycamore Community School District 427 is opening the door for more students to participate in the programs that enrich the educational experience beyond the classroom. Through recently approved Board of Education policy updates, eligible homeschool and private school students who reside within district boundaries will now have greater access to extracurricular activities and athletics offered by the district.

The Board of Education approved revisions to Board Policies 6:190, Extracurricular and Co-Curricular Activities; 6:240, Field Trips and Recreational Class Trips; and 7:40, Nonpublic School Students, Including Parochial and Home-Schooled Students, during its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. These updates reflect the district's commitment to creating opportunities for all students in the Sycamore community to learn, grow, build relationships, and develop new skills through athletics and extracurricular activities. Participation will continue to follow all applicable district expectations and eligibility requirements established by governing organizations, including the Illinois High School Association (IHSA).

"We deeply value the collaborative feedback we received from both our internal staff and our external community members throughout this process; it was essential in helping us shape a policy that opens doors, removes barriers, and strengthens the connections across our entire district,” said Dr. Kristen Campbell, Superintendent.

The updated policies remove barriers that previously limited participation for students educated outside of the district's traditional classroom setting, allowing eligible homeschool and private school students who reside within District 427 boundaries to participate in a wider range of athletic teams and extracurricular programs.

"Our family made a choice to homeschool our children, but we still see and honor the hard work District 427 is doing," said district resident Laura Warmke. "We have appreciated being able to participate in music, art, and P.E. programs in the past, but the bar to participate in athletics and extracurriculars was too high. The new policy changes that, and I am excited about the possibilities for my children." Warmke added, "I think one of my children in particular will thrive playing a sport in middle school. I know District 427's goal is to empower all learners, and this policy change truly will help empower local children."

"Athletics and extracurricular activities help students discover their interests, develop leadership skills, and create relationships with their peers," said Mr. Chauncey Carrick, Director of Athletics and Activities. "We're excited that these policy updates will allow more students in our community to benefit from those experiences."

Participation in athletics and activities offers students valuable opportunities to build leadership, teamwork, communication, and resilience while strengthening connections within the Sycamore community. The policy updates reinforce Sycamore Community School District 427's mission of Empowering All Learners to Succeed in Their World by expanding opportunities for students across the community to engage in the educational experiences that help shape well-rounded learners.
