Sycamore Community School District 427 is pleased to welcome Mr. Nate Russell as our newest Board of Education member. Mr. Russell was officially voted in during the Special Board Meeting on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, where he was selected to fill the vacancy left by Ms. Heather Tomlinson.

Mr. Russell brings a strong commitment to public service and dedication to the community. He has a passion for working with students and will be a valuable asset as the district continues to grow and empower our learners. We recently had the opportunity to ask Mr. Russell a few questions and learn more about the perspective he brings to the Board of Education.

Tell us about yourself.

I moved to DeKalb, IL, for a job opportunity in 2005 from my hometown, Chesapeake, Virginia. In 2014, I married Katheryne Russell, who was born and raised in Sycamore. Together, we have two sons: Nathaniel Russell III, who is 9 years old and currently a fourth grader at South Prairie Elementary, and Noah, who is 5 years old and attends the Little Spartans Early Learning Program and OSCAR Jr. I have dedicated my entire professional career to the railroad industry. I began in 2008 with Union Pacific Railroad as a train conductor and became a locomotive engineer in 2012. In 2016, I joined Metra Railroad as a locomotive engineer, and today I serve as a Senior PTC Operations Engineer on the Positive Train Control Management Team, supporting critical safety and operational technologies. I have also been deeply involved in the Sycamore community. For the past five years, I have served as a board member and coaching coordinator for the Sycamore Youth Football and Cheer organization, and I have served as Vice President of the South Prairie Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).

Why did you want to join the District 427 Board of Education?

I am most excited about serving on the Board of Education for the opportunity to support the people who make our schools exceptional—our students, teachers, and staff. I am passionate about helping create an environment where students are able to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, and where educators feel valued and empowered. I look forward to collaborating with fellow board members, engaging with the community, and contributing to the district’s continued growth and success.

What excites you about serving the District 427 Board of Education?

I look forward to partnering with students, staff, teachers, administrators, and the community to work together to make the Sycamore School District as great as possible. Meeting new people and working on challenging problems is a true passion of mine. I hope to be able to take my skills and learned experiences, along with feedback from our community and school district, to work as one cohesive school board to continue and grow the success of the district and our students.

What values and professional experiences will guide your work as a member of the Sycamore Board of Education?

I am committed to working hard, staying accessible, and representing the Sycamore community with integrity. My professional experience in a technical, safety-focused industry has strengthened my problem-solving skills, teamwork, and ability to make thoughtful decisions under pressure—qualities that will guide me as a board member. I believe that actions speak louder than words, and I intend to show my dedication through consistent, meaningful action on behalf of students, families, and educators.
