Sycamore CUSD 427 Announces Health Plan Transition Generating $1.5 Million in Recurring Savings

On September 16, 2025, the Sycamore Community School District 427 Insurance Committee met and voted to eliminate the Low Deductible Health Plan for all staff members. This transition, which will take effect January 1, 2026, is projected to generate an estimated $1.5 million in recurring annual savings for employees and the district, approximately $640,000 in employee savings and $860,000 in district savings.

As part of this transition, the Board of Education approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Sycamore Education Association (SEA) regarding staff health insurance.

In recent months, the District Insurance Committee has worked closely with the district’s insurance broker, the Board of Education, and the SEA to evaluate health insurance options. The committee’s shared goal was to identify the most sustainable, cost-effective path forward while remaining mindful of the impact on employees and their families.

Through this collaborative process, the committee recommended removing the Low Deductible Health Plan and maintaining the existing High Deductible Health Plan (HSA) as the district’s primary health insurance option. The SEA leadership hosted a membership vote, and an overwhelming majority voted to approve the change.

“This outcome shows how much can be achieved when we work side by side with our staff,” said Board President, Mr. Michael DeVito. “I’m proud of the collaboration between SEA, our Insurance Committee, and district leadership.”

This agreement reflects the district’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, good stewardship, and collaboration. The outcome demonstrates how transparency and mutual trust can lead to meaningful, positive results for staff and all district stakeholders.
