From mowing 65 acres of grass to maintaining 11 acres of roofing, the Office of Buildings and Grounds keeps our District in working order.

Our District owns 182.75 acres of land, including 35 acres of sports complexes for soccer, track, cross country, baseball, softball, and football, and a 47-acre piece of land next to the middle school which our Sycamore FFA Chapter farms. The Office of Buildings and Grounds also oversees all necessary maintenance and improvements to our nine buildings whose combined square footage totals over 800,000!

Water Testing

Cleaning Procedures

The health and safety of our students and staff will always be our top priority. That’s why our ongoing standard cleaning procedures follow guidelines provided by the DeKalb County Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Facility +, Virex II, and Alpha HP are our primary cleaning products to disinfect surfaces both during and after school hours.
- Facility +, Alpha HP, and Virex II are proven to kill many common bacterial and viral strains including Coronavirus.
- Morning Mist is proven to kill many common bacterial and viral strains.
Hard surfaces at all schools including handrails, door frames, water fountains, pencil sharpeners, light switches, cafeteria tables, desks, chairs, toilets, sinks, stalls, door handles, and other frequently-touched surfaces are cleaned daily, as is standard to the flu season cleaning procedures we follow each year.
Hand sanitizing stations can be found throughout each of our school buildings.
Our cafeterias continue to follow procedures that meet all food safety standards, including personal hygiene, handwashing, and the use of gloves during meal preparation and service. We also use food-safe chemicals to clean and disinfect trays and all food preparation equipment.
Clorox, Lysol wipes, Oxivir, Facility +, Alpha HP, or Virex II disinfectant is available in all buildings for cleaning surfaces.

Water Testing

On Monday, January 16, 2017, Illinois Governor Rauner signed into law a requirement that Illinois public schools serving preschool through fifth-grade students complete lead testing of water sources used for drinking or food preparation.

The new law requires that schools perform this testing by Sunday, December 31, 2017. It also required that schools notify parents if lead levels from any source of potable water in any sample exceeded 5.0 ppb, which is much stricter than the EPA’s requirement (15.0 ppb). The entirety of the law, Public Act 099-0922, can be read on the State of Illinois website.

During the fall of 2017, Sycamore Community School District 427 worked with consultants at Aires Consulting, a division of Gallagher Bassett Services, Inc. to test drinking water throughout the District for student and staff safety and to comply with the new law. The language of the new law indicated that the District should also test all classroom, lounge, and nurse sinks in addition to drinking fountains and kitchen sinks.

As a result of the findings, Sycamore Community School District 427 is taking the following actions:

Establishing a water management plan, including identification of lead-containing plumbing, scheduled flushing, possible fixture replacement and monitoring.
