Board of Education At Large Election Referendum

Voters will be asked:

Shall the members of the Board of Education of Sycamore Community Unit School District No. 427, DeKalb and Kane Counties, Illinois, be elected at large and without restriction by area of residence within the school district?

Voters will have the option to vote "Yes" or "No." 

For this referendum to pass, one of the following two outcomes must occur:

• All of the townships in the district must pass the proposition by a simple majority, or
• A super majority (two-thirds) of all voters in the district must approve it.

It’s important to note that a simple majority of all voters is not sufficient to pass the referendum.

If the referendum is approved, all Board of Education seats will become at-large positions. Current Board members will serve out their existing terms, but future elections will follow the at-large system. This means that voters across the district will have the opportunity to vote for every board seat up for election, rather than just those representing their specific township. The next election that will be impacted by this will occur in April 2025.

Three (3) board members live in Sycamore Township (Jones, DeVito, and Grados), two (2) reside in Cortland Township (Chyllo and Copple), and one (1) lives in South Grove (Evans).

The Board of Education voted to add this question to the November 2024 ballot to provide as much opportunity for interested individuals who would like to serve on the Board. Candidates who receive the most votes, regardless of their township, will be elected.

 Over recent years, Cortland and Sycamore townships have experienced substantial population growth, while Mayfield and South Grove townships have remained relatively stable. Portions of Dekalb, Burlington, and Virgil townships also fall within the Sycamore CUSD 427 school district boundaries, but the number of residents who reside within our school district boundaries in those townships is very small and therefore they were not included.
